Weight Lifting Equipment

The first category of equipment used in this sport is the weights themselves. These are in the form of steel barbells weighing 20 kg for men and 15 kg for women. Each barbell has patterns called knurling engraved on its body. This pattern helps lifters get a steady grip on the barbell and reduce the chances of slipping. Specified weights for different categories are fixed on both the ends of the barbell. These weights are made of steel discs that are coated with rubber in different colors. So more weight is needed in the form of collars to hold these steel discs in place. These collars weigh 2.5 kg.

The arena for a weightlifting event needs a special kind of flooring. The size of this arena is as per specific international standards, four meters by four meters. This is a wooden floor coated with non-slip material. These standards are specified to ensure minimizing injury to participants.

Electronic devices are used for judging weightlifting events, monitoring movements, displaying scores and the like. A weightlifting event is judged by three referees who are provided with an electronic device to make their decision known to all. Color coded lights from the electronic panel signal the referees? decisions. As soon as two referees pass identical decisions a signal is given to the participant to lower the barbell. The referee's activity is monitored by the jury bench, who also has an electronic device for the purpose.

A scoreboard is used in weightlifting also. An electronic scoreboard with all relevant details is displayed prominently at the venue. An electronic attempt board and timing clock monitors each participant when he or she performs. The IWF has developed a computerized competition and calling and result system. This board displays calling lists and results and enables participants and their coaches to plan strategies.
